Free Slicehost iPhone App is Ready

The free version of my Slicehost iPhone app has been approved by Apple!

You should see it on the App Store very very soon (probably when you read this). The free version does everything that Slicehost Pro (the $1.99 version) does, but only allows you to use one Slicehost API key.

To quickly enter your API key, email yourself a link like slicehost://your-api-key (for the free version) or slicehostpro://your-api-key for the Pro version.

dang - mail is not translating it into a clickable link

  2. Russ G says:

    Hm, 2 things:

1- The slicehost:// link didn’t work, had to manually enter the key
2- After manually entering the key, it crashes shortly after load.

  3. I didn’t know there was a slicehost app for the iPhone until I saw the free version was ready. However, since I have a $25 iTunes gift card waiting to be burned, I just went ahead and bought the pro version.

    Just wanted to say thanks!

  4. Great job and thanks.

The Slicehost iPhone App is EXCELLENT. Wish I had read this post before I entered my API key by hand — surprisingly, I typed it correctly the first time through ;)

Thank you, just another reason why Slicehost rocks.

  6. Tony says:

How do I make it into a clickable link? I emailed myself but in Mail.app on my iPhone its not clickable.

  7. Steve says:

    Hey Mike,

I just installed it on my 3g iphone and it crashes on start up.

I’ve tried using both the slicehost:// link trick and then putting the api key in by hand.

When I use the link it prompts if I want to use the key, I choose to use it. Then it spins for about 3 seconds and returns to the iphone’s home screen.

When the key is typed into the settings it opens for about 3 seconds, says loading, and returns to the iphone home screen.

I tried rebooting my phone and then I tried it on a co-workers 3g iphone and got the same results.

Any ideas? The app looks very useful.

  8. Mike says:

@woods: you’re right. Mail won’t naturally do that. the way I got around it is by using my gmail account and using the “make link” button

@Russ G: have you rebooted your phone lately? I’ve seen other people crash because something else leaked too much memory, but I haven’t been able to reproduce the app crashing on any phone I’ve tested… let me know if you still have problems.

    @Jason Emerick: thanks!!

@Adam Bair: again, thanks! :) I’m glad you like it!

@Tony: see the beginning of this comment. Mail.app won’t automatically convert a custom-scheme://whatever path into a URL…you have to actually make a link.

AWESOME! although - could you update the description in the itunes store to clarify the differences between the free and pro versions? #protip: convince us to upgrade!

  10. Mike says:

@Steve: I went ahead and downloaded the app from the App Store (the version on my phone was installed straight from XCode), and I haven’t been able to make it crash (with good API keys, bad API keys, trailing slashes, or anything else). Perhaps you could send me your device log?

@seaofclouds: thanks for the tip :) I just changed the description :)

  11. I got the pro app. Used your gmail link trick and it worked on putting int he API key, thank you. The only catch was that I had multiple accounts. One I wasn’t the admin on, and one I was. When I put my API key in for the one I was, I was taken to the account where I wasn’t an admin and it wouldn’t let me switch to the other account.

Most likely a Single-Sign-On issue. Just want you to be aware.

Thank you for the great app.

  12. Denton says:

    Mike,

Very handy - thanks. One thing that I think would make it better would be to password protect the app.

Losing my iPhone would be bad but having the person who finds it reboot our slices would make more people than me unhappy. I know I can turn off API access password protection would be better.

Maybe this would be a good feature differntatior for the Pro version?

    Again, thanks!

    Roger

  13. Mike says:

@Jason: I’m not sure I follow… on the Pro version (using a slicehostpro:// link), it should *add* the API key. If you’re using the free version (with a slicehost:// link), it’ll replace whatever API key you’re using with the latest one you enter. I’ll test again and make sure it’s not overwriting API keys when it shouldn’t.

@Denton: I love that idea…I actually had that in my to-do list for a future version of Slicehost Pro, but I wasn’t sure if anyone would want it. I’m definitely going to do it now, so look out for it in a future update :)

  14. Denton says:

    Mike,

OK, I’ll be looking forward to the update with password protection.

It is handy to see status without having to mess with the keyboard so you might show status (name/state) along with the password entry so that a password is provided before the user can muck around with the state of the slice whether it’s a reboot, dns change or whatever.

  15. Chris says:

Sounds like a great little app

The slicehost:// doesn’t work in mail.app on the iphone though and I really can’t be f#cked typing in that API key ;)

Any reason it doesn’t work as expected?

  16. Mike says:

@Chris: Mail.app isn’t going to automatically recognize that string format as a URL, so you have to actually make it be an html link. I use gmail and use the “make link” button in the compose mail page.

  17. Kyle says:

I, too, tried to install this application on my iPhone 3G, and after trying a couple times to get the API key correct, I finally did, and soon after I start the app it inevitably goes back to the menu, no matter what part of the app I may try to view. I wish I could use this app, it sounds like a great time saver.

  18. Mike says:

@Kyle: sorry for the troubles. do you have multiple IP addresses on any of your slices? If so, the app is going to crash until Apple approves the version 1.2 update.

  19. Kyle says:

Ah okay, yes that would be my problem. All of my slices have multiple ips. Thanks for the clarification and I look forward to the 1.2 update.

  20. Rob says:

Love this app! Thanks a million.
